CASE 1: Find a specific piece of news when you know its full title

Open Factiva: https://iese.libguides.com/Factiva
Copy the complete title of the article and paste it into the main search box, located at the very top of the web.
Press Enter.
If the article is available, it should appear as the first result.

Open the article. To download it as a PDF, select the Download icon.

CASE 2: Find all news from a specific publication over a selected period

Open Factiva: https://iese.libguides.com/Factiva
Use the Search Builder option in the top-left corner of the web.
In the filters on the right, go to Sources and search for the publication you want. In this example, we use The Wall Street Journal.

When you find the publication, do not click its name. Instead, select Add to query (the second icon displayed next to the source name). This copies the publication's code into the search box.

If you regularly search the same publication and know its code, you can enter the code directly in the search box. For The Wall Street Journal, the code is: rst=j

Select the date range you want from the date drop-down menu above the search box.

Click Search to run the query and display the articles from the selected publication and date range.

CASE 3: Find news from a specific publication containing keywords in the headline or lead paragraph

Open Factiva: https://iese.libguides.com/Factiva
Use the Search Builder. We continue to use The Wall Street Journal as the example.

In the Sources field on the right, search for The Wall Street Journal. This time, when you find it, click the publication name itself. This adds the publication as a source without adding its code to the search box.

Use the search box to enter the keywords you want to find. You can combine multiple keywords with the operators AND, OR, and NOT. You can also use quotation marks to search for an exact group of words.

You can use the hlp code (Headline & Lead Paragraph) to search specifically for words in the article's headline and/or first paragraph. For example, to search for the two words together, enter: hlp="private equity"

Select the date range you want and then select Search to run the query.

Search syntax used in this FAQ

  • AND / OR / NOT – combine keywords in different ways.
  • Quotation marks – search for a group of words together as a phrase.
  • rst=j – publication code used in this example for The Wall Street Journal.
  • hlp= – searches for terms in the headline and/or lead paragraph.
